was interrupting paul ryan, his opponent. he was going right at him where last week we had mott romney pushing around poor jim lehrer. it's disingenuous for the right to say let's not interrupt. judge, chris, does the president at this moment need to have a biden performance? i was asking brad woodhouse that a second ago. what is your thought here? >> it depends. town halls are different than one-on-one debates. it's a different dynamic. people need to be aware of that when they say the president needs to come out and be like a bulldog, be very aggressive. sounds really good. a nice talking point. when you've got 75 undecided voters you have to connect with, it's dangerous. i think the president's got to be himself. he's got to be very forceful in defense of his record and his presidency. and be clear where he wants to go. >> do you see them challenging each other on the floor during the town hall? >> it depends how the dynamic flows. my guess is both will be hesitant to do that. you're going to see them challenge them. it will be respectfully brutal. they are going to be tough 0 on each other

the romney-ryan ticket for making this an issue. >> we weren't told they wanted more security. we did not know they wanted more security again. >> so joining me now with their take on all of this, ben smith is the editor in chief of the content website buzz feed and then to his right in san francisco is cnn contributor and anchor of "real news," amy holmes. let me start with you, ben since you're sitting right beside me. that was a big issue and this has been a contentious debate and the white house has been taking it on the chin over what happened in libya, and it seemed to some that either the vice president wasn't sure of his semantics when he said we didn't know they needed more security or it seemed to others he knew that the white house didn't have that information right away, but it's all about the optics. how did they come off last night on this very critical foreign policy issue. >> that struck me as biden's worst moment, and i don't know if joe biden personally knew about barackbama, and there had been a hearing the previous day which was very clear that the state department

that's what he'll go for. on the one hand mitt romney kind of endorsed the ryan plan but he's walked away if it. i think he's going in on that, and he'll go in on the inconsistencies on where ryan and romney stand on the issues. he will force ryan to sort of defend his candidate and stand up for him, and i think he's also going after foreign policy. joe biden used to be the chairman of the senate foreign relations committee. >> even though he's one of the worst in history. >> paul ryan has no foreign policy experience at all. >> i'm waiting for joe biden appear par thid division of iraq. it's not true. ryan has made had trips abroad including the middle east. >> they did fund-raiser abroad, too. >> i didn't know that. >> they did in london. >> i think joe biden will be very formidable. i think the challenge for paul ryan in the debate is he has to come across in complete control of the facts. when you see a 27-age year difference between these two, it's very easy for a young person like ryan to get schooled by the senior biden. he can't let that happen. at the same time he's got to b

. god bless him, he fought for our country. romney and ryan, first off, let's get something clear here once and for all, as far as the sequestered cuts go, it is not obama's thing, okay? it was congress and paul ryan's thing because they were too immature to act like grown-ups and make a deal, ok? obama had nothing to do with it. it was paul ryan and congress. guest: i do think that the one of the issues that one of the -- that people will be basing their vote on is the question of leadership at large and that is why you heard a lot about leadership from mitt romney and what kind of role obama is projecting and by extension what he is doing at home in guiding in shaping how we use natural resources. although the polls might not registered significance to a particular foreign policy issue, when it comes to the broader question of leadership, that is part of what people will be casting their vote on. there is an opportunity, as the mitt romney team has identified, to suggest criticism of president obama as a leader. host: president obama was at a fund-raiser in california last night.
